Disk Police, Version 1.3 Introduction ------------------------------------- Welcome to Disk Police. This program is designed to manage shared disk space, typically on a network file server. It finds "disk hogs" - users who consume too much space on the shared disk. It does this by allowing you to establish a list of shared disk users, each with a certain space allotment. These users are the owners of their space and are responsible for staying within their assigned space limits. Disk Police checks the disk against the list, finding users who are in violation so that action can be taken. Disk Police is designed to resolve the disk space problem that is so common to DOS networks. That is, no matter how large your network file server is, unless its space is managed and regularly cleaned up, it won't take long until all the space is consumed. Disk Police makes that disk management easy. Disk Police is a program written for use with Microsoft Windows. It is very easy to use and requires no documentation other than Help messages (provided in the program). The only operator effort required is to set up the list of users. Once this is done, Disk Police does the rest just by pressing a button. Disk Police, Version 1.3 is designed to be used with Microsoft Windows Version 3.0 or higher. Registration ------------ Disk Police is a shareware program. This keeps its cost low and allows you to run the program before you decide to buy it. The program is distributed as the full working verion, with no limitations. Please feel free to try it out, and distribute it to others. However, the software is not free. If you continue to use it beyond a reasonable introductory period, please register by sending $49 (check or money order) to: Douglas E. Phillips 11215 76th Ave. NE Kirkland, WA 98034 (206) 821-3531 Installation ------------ 1. Start Microsoft Windows (if it is not already running). Disk Police is designed for Windows Version 3.0, but it will run on Windows Version 2.x as well. 2. Create a directory for the Disk Police program and data files: Use File Manager, File menu item, Create Directory Create a new directory... C:\POLICE Note that any other directory name is acceptable. 3. Copy all files from the Disk Police program disk: Put Disk Police program disk in A: drive Use File Manager, Switch to A: drive icon Highlight all file names Select File Copy menu item Copy to C:\DP (or whatever directory you created) Copy the DP.INI file to your Windows directory (C:\WINDOWS) 4. Change the DP.INI file if desired. Use Windows Notepad to make the changes. DP.INI has the following lines: [DISKPOLICE] DataPath=C:\DP\ SliceLimit=50 Change DataPath to the name of the directory to which you installed Disk Police. Make sure to include the full data path, including the last \. Change SliceLimit to any value between 0 and 100. This is the number of slices (or users) Disk Police can handle. Keep in mind that each slice will take 542 bytes of memory. So a SliceLimit of 100 will consume about 54K memory.
